Coconut Oil

Resist the urge to think piña colada and imagine one exotic oil that has more uses than your roll of duct tape! Coconut oil used to have a bad rep but after new studies revealed all the health-promoting super properties of this island native, we had to pay attention! Coconut oil can be used as a moisturizer for skin and hair, a diet aid used to increase metabolism and aid in digestion, as well as promoting good cholesterol. The most stark effects of this fruity friend comes in increased health benefits when used to replace common household cooking oils and as a supplement that is antifungal, antimicrobial and pro-immunity! If only everything were this useful!

Coconut Oil is quickly becoming recognized as one of the healthiest oils available. For years it was overlooked because of its high concentration of saturated fat, but recent research has indicated that the type of saturated fat (known as medium chain triglycerides or MCTs) contained in coconut oil is extremely healthy. Unlike more common longer chain fatty triglycerides, MCTs are absorbed into the liver directly where they are burned for energy- leaving behind a type of super calorie source called ketone bodies. Ketone bodies can cross the blood-brain barrier and can actually generate approximately 25% more ATP per unit of oxygen consumed than any other energy source (fats, carbs, proteins). This ketone super fuel can be used by all the tissues of the body.
